Lying just outside the West Midlands conurbation of Birmingham and Wolverhampton, and bordering into Staffordshire and Shropshire, lies Wolverhampton Airport - or Wolverhampton Halfpenny Green Airport to give it its full name. Constructed during World War II in 1940 and 1941 for use as a Royal Air Force aerodrome, it was initially known as RAF Bobbington, after the nearby village of the same name. However, to avoid confusion with the similarly named RAF Bovingdon in Hertfordshire, this was quickly changed to RAF Halfpenny Green in 1943.
The RAF unit that was located at the airport during the war was the No.3 Air Observer & Navigator School, who flew both Blackburn Botha and Avro Anson planes. They were situated here until November 1945, seven months after VE Day and the end of the war.
RAF Halfpenny Green continued to be used, on and off, for various units until 1956, when the site was abandoned for a period lasting five years, before civilian aviation commenced at the site in 1961.
This still continues today, with flying lessons in both light aircraft and helicopters, along with private, chartered flights and training facilities. Wolverhampton Airport also offers both Asphalt and grass runways, each measuring 635 x 86 metres, as well as generous hangarage and maintenance/refuelling facilities.

A host of excellent light aircraft including the Cessna 182 and the Piper PA-34 Seneca are on site at the airport, which are both perfectly suited to this unique flying day. For the first half of your hour in the air, a CAA approved flying instructor will guide you through navigating and piloting a plane for the first time.
Then the second half gives you a chance to sit back and see how it’s flown and piloted under expert hands. It all adds up to a flying experience quite unlike any other you’ll have enjoyed before.

Our range of Helicopter Ride packages - from anywhere up to 15 miles - that run from Wolverhampton Airport will give you the opportunity to see the West Midlands in a totally new perspective - from many feet up in the air.
The rides - which can also be booked for two to enjoy, making them a fabulous idea for celebrations of any special occasion - will see you take off with rocketing rotor blades to take in many incredible views and sights.
Your pilot will be your in-flight tour guide, meaning that you’ll not miss a second of anything, including Coventry Cathedral, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, the historic Aston Hall or the beautiful parkland of Cannon Hill and Sutton.
Midlands Microlighting
Microlights are some of the lightest but most powerful aircraft in the world, and our range of Microlight lessons offer the chance to experience why they’re a favourite of flying enthusiasts of all ages.
A CAA approved instructor will accompany you for our range of flying lessons, up to 60 minutes at a time, where you’ll master and get to grips with enjoying these small planes that are inexpensive but incredibly good fun to fly.
Your instructor will also give you some Pilot Notes on your performance as well as a signed Flight Certificate to take home and hang with pride once you’re back on the ground.
