Situated on the southern side of the River Humber, which runs between Hull on the northern side and Scunthorpe in the south, with the Humber Bridge connecting them, Humberside Airport started life, as many of our FlyDays venues did, as an RAF base in World War II.
Back then however, it was called RAF Kirmington, which opened during the peak of combat in 1941, and it was from here that the No. 166 Squadron RAF operated the Avro Lancaster bomber planes. A memorial bell to them is still on display in the main terminal building.
Once the war ended in 1945, it lay abandoned and disused for almost 30 years, until the local council saw its potential use as an airport in 1974, when it became Kirmington Airport.
With the UK Government’s renaming of the county to Humberside that same year, it was thus given the name it still has today, even after the Humberside name for the county was abolished in 1996.
The original Asphalt runway, which was extended in 1992 to its current length of 2196 x 214 metres, is still in place, which thus allowed the airport the opportunity to welcome larger aircraft to the base.
Humberside is still in commercial operation for regularly scheduled and chartered flights to Aberdeen, Amsterdam and Palma de Mallorca to name several destinations, with around 200,000 passengers passing through the airport a year as of 2019.
Flying Over the Humber
No matter which side of the River Humber you sit on, with our range of flying lessons at Humberside Airport, you can get to explore both sides of it as you never have before, from hundreds of feet up in the air.
Accompanied by a CAA qualified instructor, you’ll hop into an excellent two seater aeroplane, and under their careful guidance and expert tuition will become confident enough to master the controls and experience the thrill of aviation in no time at all.
Sessions come available as 30 minute or 60 minute packages, and not only do you receive a signed Flight Certificate to show off with pride on your wall, but the tuition you receive here will count towards obtaining your Private Pilot’s Licence.
