What Is Drone Flying?
The term "drone" usually refers to any remotely piloted aircraft system. Drones, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles, can carry out a wide range of tasks, from military operations to standard package delivery. Many drones come equipped with features like cameras to collect visual data and propellers to stabilise flight patterns.
Drones were initially designed for military and aerospace applications, but they have become increasingly popular in everyday use due to their improved safety, efficiency, and versatility. They are now being used as toys for children and even for creating spectacular light shows.
The drones you will be using in these experiences are similar to those used in light shows, Mavic and Phantom Pro drones, piloted by CAA-certified commercial drone pilots.
Where Can You Fly A Drone?
As per the guidelines provided by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the regulations for flying drones in the UK are determined by assessing the level of risk involved, which includes factors such as the location of your flight, the distance from other individuals, and the dimensions and weight of the drone being operated.
When flying your drone indoors, aviation legislation does not apply. However, it is important to take necessary precautions. If you are flying your drone within a building or in an area where it cannot escape into the open air, you are not subject to aviation legislation.
Key rules include:
- Never fly more than 120m above the surface
- Do not fly closer to people than 50m
- Always keep your drone or model aircraft in sight
- Always keep a safe distance
- Never fly over people who are crowded together - i.e: Shopping centres, sports events, religious gatherings etc…
- Keep at least 150m away from residential, recreational, commercial and industrial sites.
- Never fly in an airport flight restriction zone unless you have permission
- If your drone has a camera (unless it's a toy) or weighs 250g or more, then you need to register with the CAA- Which will need to be renewed every year.
- Visit the CAA Website for more information on their official guidelines and where you can fly your drone.
