Experience High-Flying Fun and Attend an Airshow This Summer!
08 August 2024
Despite the end of the Summer not being that far off, there’s still time to soak up the remaining warm days and longer nights before the season comes to a close. And is there a better way to do that than a visit to a local airshow where you can get close to some incredible vintage planes and stare in wonder at thrilling aerobatic displays?
We think not. So, with that in mind, here are some of the best airshows coming up across the country for the remainder of the summer.
- IWM Duxford, Cambridge
Is there a more iconic location to appreciate aviation history than the IWM Duxford in Cambridge? Full to the brim with history and an impressive hangar stocked with De Havilland’s and Spitfires, a visit here is an aviation lover's dream. But luckily, there’s more excitement to come this summer with two leading air shows coming up. So get your diaries ready!
After a day wandering around the museum and soaking up the history, you could top it all off in the evening with a stunning display of historic warbirds and impressive pyrotechnics taking place on 17th August. Featuring a mix of the following aircraft: Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress 'Sally B', De Havilland DH9, Supermarine Spitfire Mk XVI, Supermarine Spitfire FR Mk XIV and more, this would make the perfect summer’s evening for an aviation lover.
The Battle of Britain Air Show is also taking place between14th-15th September and is dubbed as a fully immersive World War 2 experience with not only an impressive fleet of vintage aircraft but the chance to don an outfit to match the era, this is a must visit for history fans who really want to turn back the clock and get up close and personal with Spitfires and Hurricanes that used to dominate the skies over Britain.
- Clacton Airfield, Essex: 22nd-23rd August
Situated along the Essex coastline, this firm favourite attracts around 250,000 people over the two days every year to Clacton Airfield. With a stunning mix of dynamic aerial displays, twilight flights and a fleet of vintage aircraft to enjoy, this is an airshow not to miss if you find yourself in the East of England! This year, they are even planning a special tribute to D-Day with a commissioned Heritage War Flight featuring the Dakota, Rolls Royce Supermarine Spitfire and the P-51 Mustang! If that wasn’t enough excitement, Clacton is even getting a special visit from the Red Devils, an elite parachute unit with the British army.
- Bournemouth Air Festival: 29th-31st August
Situated along the Bournemouth Pier in Dorset, you will find some incredible world class aerobatic displays here, as well as a flight from the RAF Typhoon Display Team! Filling up the agenda for these sunny August days along the coast is also a display from the Red Devils and the AeroSuperBatics Wing walkers. With a range of flights across this stunning coastline, if you’re around Bournemouth at this time you won’t want to miss out on all the aerial fun.
- Goodwood Aerodrome, Sussex: 6-8th September
Known for its historic motor racing vehicles, Goodwood Aerodrome is also the home of flying and this year is no exception, with an interesting display of pre 1966 aircraft on the cards as part of the Revival festival taking place between 6-8th September. You can even expect to enjoy a sunrise morning flypast if you’re an early riser and love being awake before the rest of the world, or join in on the celebrations with the Freddie March Spirit of Aviation Party and dabble in some of the incredible motorsports vehicles on display here too. Being home to RAF Westhampnett during the Second World War, it’s safe to say a visit to Goodwood is a must if you love your planes.
- Bodmin Airfield, Cornwall: September 7th
Nestled on the Cornish coast and tucked away from the crowds, you will find Bodmin Airfield. Although it boasts some of the best views of the South West, this year it is also hosting a little airshow all of its own, the Cornwall Strut Fly in. Focusing on showcasing some of the best Microlights around, this airshow will give you a new appreciation of these planes and may even convince you to try a Microlight Flying Lesson!
- Compton Abbas Airfield, Dorset: 10-11th August
You'll have to be quick off the mark with this one, but if you're in Dorset over the next few days you won’t want to miss the Golden Age of Aviation airshow taking place at Compton Abbas Airfield. Featuring Spitfire displays and more, it’s a unique day to celebrate Britain’s long aviation history and there will also be a fun fair! A great weekend out for history lovers but also one to spend with all the family, this airshow in the heart of Dorset is a must - if you can make it down there in time.
