Coventry is famous for many things: its cathedral, university, Transport Museum, the Sky Blues and its notorious ring road. But it’s also on the map for one other reason where flying enthusiasts in Warwickshire and the surrounding areas are concerned.
Coventry Airport is conveniently situated on the edge of the city, and is close to many major transport routes, including the M40 and M6 motorways. It first opened under the name Baginton Aerodrome in 1936.
Just three years later, it became a fighter airfield at the outbreak of World War II in 1939, by which point, the aircraft manufacturer Armstrong Whitworth, had built a factory on site.
During the war, it was known as RAF Baginton, with just under 15 different Squadrons situated there at one time or another. The airbase notably sustained considerable damage following the Blitz bombings of Coventry by the Luftwaffe in 1940.
Civil aviation returned to the site at the end of the war, with commercial flights from Coventry to other destinations continuing until the autumn of 2008. Today, Coventry Airport has gained a new lease of life.
As well as its use as a filming location for major TV and film productions, it is home to a number of flying clubs and flight training academies, as well as the local air ambulance service and British International Helicopters Limited.
