The North East of England offers some of the most spectacular countryside anywhere in the UK, all of which can be enjoyed with a flying experience from Beverley / Linley Hill Airfield north of Hull, east of York and south of Bridlington via the A165 and A1035.
You may be wondering why the slash exists between Beverley and Linley Hill in its name. Well, they’re one in the same, as it’s situated on Linleyhill Road, a tiny hamlet in open countryside that’s a 19 minute drive from Beverley town centre. It’s origins go back to over a century ago.
Initially known as Beverley Military Flight Station, and later Beverley Landing Ground, its first period in operation was during World War I, from 1915 - 1919. There’s some evidence to suggest that the original runway that was used in WWI was also used by Sir Alan Cobham, during his Municipal Aerodrome Campaign tour in 1929.
On his visit to Beverley, he flew a DH61 'Giant Moth' G-AAEV, named 'Youth of Britain', for the entertainment of the town’s residents - and the Mayor of Hull, as this was the closest airfield to Hull at the time.
Later on in WWII, it was used by both the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force. Now, it is home to the Hull Aero Club, which was founded in 1930 but began operating the airfield privately in 1991.
