Solent Airport

Solent has a long history of military use from starting as a Naval aviation base in 1917, changing to an RAF base just a year later with naval aviation continuing under the RAF. The base had heavy use during WWII, even being named the busiest airfield on D-Day. It continued its importance after the war, even having an aircraft unit based there. Since 1996 the military handed over use to coast guards and air search helicopters. The airfield continued to evolve in use until today where it is used for leisure flying. The airport offers flying experiences with lessons in light aircraft and flight simulators available on FlyDays.

Solent Airport Flying Experiences

Solent Airport History

Naval aviation at Lee-on-Solent began on July 30, 1917, with the establishment of the Naval Seaplane Training School by the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). Initially, aircraft were housed in temporary hangars and transported to the cliff top before being lowered by crane onto a trolley that ran on rails into the sea. Permanent facilities soon followed, including hangars, workshops, accommodation, and a double slipway.

In 1918, following the merger of the RNAS with the Royal Flying Corps (RFC), the site transitioned into an RAF station under the newly formed Royal Air Force (RAF). Throughout the 1920s, Lee-on-Solent and nearby Calshot continued to provide training in seaplane operations. A significant development came in 1931 with the construction of the first grass airstrip west of the town at Lee. By 1936, as RAF Coastal Command was established, Lee-on-Solent became its headquarters, commissioned as HMS Daedalus, a pivotal base during World War II.

Post-war, HMS Daedalus retained its importance and was officially renamed HMS Ariel on October 31, 1959. It subsequently became home to the Naval Air Trials Installation Unit (NATIU), tasked with installing and testing new systems in various flying test bed activities.
