Haverfordwest Airport, situated in the beautiful Pembrokeshire countryside, just over 2 miles outside the county town of the same name, was born out of the former RAF Haverfordwest air base that was in operation for the final two years of World War II.
Between 1943 and 1945, it was controlled by the No. 17 group of the RAF Coastal Command as well as postings for numerous RAF squadrons and units, but once the war ended, it was abandoned and fell into disrepair for several years after that.
And that’s the way it stayed until the late 1950s, when Pembrokeshire County Council bought the old air base, seeing its potential for civilian aviation, which still continues at the airport to this day.
Haverfordwest is licenced to fly public transport of passengers as well as flying instruction under the Civil Aviation Authority, holding their Number P595 Ordinary Licence since 1974, so it not only supports local businesses but also recreational flying for others to enjoy too.
The airport has a unique pyramid shaped Asphalt runway structure, measuring 1524 x 45 metres, a range of hangarage up to 10,000 sq ft, as well as refuelling and lighting facilities.
Pembrokeshire Skies
Surrounded by gorgeous rugged coastline overlooking the Irish Sea to the North, West and South of the county, as well as some stunning landmarks that can be dated as far back as the Roman period, Pembrokeshire has some of the finest natural beauty on offer in all of Wales, and indeed the British Isles.
Highlights that you might see from the air include Pembroke Castle, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, Tenby, Carew Castle and St. David’s Cathedral.
Booking to fly from Haverfordwest Airport will give you the opportunity to see the surrounding countryside as you’ve never seen it before, whether you’re a local looking for a unique day out, or even if you’re visiting the area on holiday.
Learning to Fly at Haverfordwest
Our two most popular packages we have available to book at Haverfordwest are our range of flying lessons. If you’ve ever dreamt about what it’d be like to fly your own plane, now’s your chance to make that dream a reality.
A flying lesson must surely be at the top of many people’s bucket list. Not much else comes close to offering such sheer excitement, yet while the adrenaline is pumping, you can be rest assured that your safety is paramount as you’ll be expertly guided by a Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) instructor.
Taking Control
You can actually take the controls and fly the aeroplane with our 30 minute aeroplane flying lesson in a two-seater plane. However, before you take to the skies, you’ll receive a flight briefing when your instructor will explain some of the basic controls and flying techniques.
Within minutes, you can then put what you’ve learnt into practice, and feel the unadulterated exhilaration of being a pilot. If you’ve then been bitten by the aviation bug then you can use the experience as the first steps towards a Private Pilot’s Licence. The sky is your oyster!
Another Level
Move it up a gear with our 60 minute aeroplane lesson. Once again, it’s in a two-seater aeroplane, but this time the experience lasts longer and provides an even greater insight of what it takes to be a pilot.
Your instructor will make you feel at ease in the cockpit and, when you are ready, hand over the controls to you. After landing a signed certificate highlighting your daring exploits will be yours to keep and may provide future inspiration to follow a career in aviation.
Fun for the Family
Haverfordwest Airport has a fantastic selection of facilities available on site. Spectators are always welcome to come along too and take pictures, so why not make a family day out of it?
Once your flying time is done, you can relax and enjoy a tasty treat or a light refreshment together in the Propellers Cafe which offers hot and cold drinks and snacks. They also do an excellent cooked breakfast there, which is a favourite amongst locals in the area.
