Home to the Staffordshire Aero Club, Otherton Airfield is located near the small Staffordshire village of Pillaton. In close proximity to the M6 motorway, affording good links to Stafford, Cannock, Walsall and Wolverhampton, it was first opened as RAF Penkridge during World War II in 1942.
It was primarily an elementary flying training school for many WWII pilots, who commenced their flying careers in Tiger Moths. It laid derelict for many years when it closed after the end of the war, but once the Staffordshire Aero Club moved in in the 1980s, it became their home, with them developing the airfield into what you see today.
And as well as the lively and friendly Aero Club, it's at Otherton Airfield that a selection of three trial Microlighting flight packages are available to book, perfect for those in the West Midlands looking to take their first steps into aviation! Starting from just £79, sessions are available to book here for 20 minutes, 30 minutes or 60 minutes.
All the sessions are run and approved by the British Microlight Aircraft Association (BMAA), and under the guidance of qualified pilots and following a full safety briefing, you'll get the opportunity to learn and master flying a flexwing or fixed-wing microlight overlooking the surrounding Staffordshire countryside.
And as those as young as 14 can take part in the sessions, these would make for the perfect flying experiences to book for the younger aviator in your life as a special surprise for their Christmas or birthday gifts, or even as a fun school holiday activity!
