The countryside around Oxfordshire, and the nearby Cotswolds and Gloucestershire is some of the most beautiful in all the British Isles. What better way therefore, to enjoy it then from the air? Enstone Airfield offers you the opportunity to do just that. It is also steeped in aviation history.
It’s story really begins in World War II, when it was opened in 1942 as a satellite airfield for the RAF base at the nearby small market town of Moreton-in-Marsh. The main force based there at the time were the Vickers Wellington bombers, who used it as their Operational Training Unit.
From and to just after the end of the war in 1945, it was also a base for the USAAF North American Harvards and RAF Airspeed Oxfords, before it closed for good in 1947. It has since returned to civilian flying purposes, which still remain in operation to this day.
It is the base for the Oxfordshire Sportflying Club, as well as other clubs and flying schools that offer training in flying light aircraft and Microlights, with an 1100 x 40 metre Asphalt runway and an 800 metre long grass runway that runs parallel to this.
Oxfordshire Beckons
Enstone Airfield is a very conveniently located base for fantastic flying experiences and is a popular destination with aviation fans.
It is located a stone’s throw from Banbury and within easy reach of the M40 motorway and the A44. More importantly, it is nestled amongst the rolling English countryside, meaning flying above some of the quaintest villages and scenery in the whole of the UK.
