Historical helicopter moments - News

Helicopters have been a staple in our skies since the very first inceptions of the aircraft were born in the early 20th Century. So, we at FlyDays.co.uk have decided to look back and list some important milestones in helicopter flight history.

  • First functional helicopter – Focke-Wulf FW-61

Although many prototypes had been created and trialed in the 50 years prior to the Germans building the Focke-Wulf FW-61, it was this helicopter that truly set a new benchmark in 1936.

Designed and built by Henrich Focke, its blueprint of a twin-rotor configuration was something that hadn't been seen before, and set the tone for the same designs of helicopter we see today.

  • First jet-powered helicopter – Aerospatiale SA-313 Alouette II

In 1955, French manufacturer, Sud Aviation, built the first ever jet-powered helicopter. Capable of flying as high as 26,000ft, the machine was used as an experiment in mountain rescues in the Alps and Mont Blanc.

The Alouette II would go on to serve in 47 armed forces, earning the distinction of being the very first helicopter to carry anti-tank munitions. In the 22 years of production, over 1,500 of the SA-313 helicopters were built.

  • The Vietnam icon – Bell UH-1 Iroquois

If you've ever seen a Vietnam war movie, or heard Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Fortunate Son', you'll immediately envision the 'Huey'. Its classic design and camouflage green colour stands out as one of the great choppers of our time.

A pop culture legend, the Iroquois was used as a medical, extraction and general utilities helicopter by the American army during the infamous Vietnam war from 1955 to 1975.

The classic 'whump whump' sound created by the twin-blade rotor is something that will live on forever. An aviation classic.

  • The personal chopper – Bell 206 JetRanger

Arguably the most recognisable helicopter in the world, the Bell 206 has proven to be the most popular aircraft for civilians, television companies, videographers, and celebrities alike.

Its lightweight design and agile performance make it a fan favourite among anyone looking to get from A to B in the quickest possible time.

40 years ago this year, an upgraded version, the 206L, became the first helicopter to circumnavigate the globe, taking 29 days.
