King of the Sky
A hot air balloon ride is a bucket list favourite. It holds a sort of power to replicate dreams unlike any other experience. It is also perfect for those who want to experience life from above but also be able to take in the breath-taking views this unique ride has to offer.
Up, Up and Away
It wasn’t until more recent years, that humanity started using hot air balloons as a means of transportation. An adaptation of its predecessor the sky lantern, Chinese inventors have been testing and adapting this method of elevation for thousands of years. The lanterns were used during the Three Kingdoms era for military signalling due to their ability to reach such a high altitude and be seen from a great distance.
In the 18th century, a priest envisioned an aerial apparatus that could be used as a vessel for strategic communication, and it wasn’t long before the grand idea caught wind in Europe. In 1783, two French brothers demonstrated their unmanned hot air balloon to the public, later repeating the stunt with the addition of animals.
When finally, Jean-Francois Pilatre de Rozier became the first man to board and fly a hot air balloon. Soon after came the beginning of passenger rides which was a significant milestone for the birth of aviation.
Fast forward to today and balloon-based transportation is thriving thanks to hundreds of years of innovation and improvements. There are festivals, societies and competitions based around this true icon of aviation antiquity.
