The changes have been made by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), in a bid to make the UK's busier skies safer while tackling drone technology advances. However, those who break the new laws, which might impact half a million drone owners, could face fines or even a prison sentence.

One of the biggest updates means anyone flying a drone or model aircraft weighing over 100g or more will now need to pass a theory test to get a Flyer ID. Previously, this was only needed for heavier drones.

Another change means that drones and model aircraft flown at night must have a green flashing light fitted and turned on for operations, while class marks and new product standards will make it easier to know what the drone can do and where it can fly.
