Why Fly in the Winter? The Benefits of Cold Weather Flying
28 October 2024
The benefits of flying in cold weather soars as the temperature plunges. Winter is a perfect time of year to head skywards for a number of reasons, not least the incredible visibility that can come from flying through crystal clear skies on a cold, dry day.
If you’re thinking of booking a flying experience with FlyDays, or taking a flight further afield, then here’s why you shouldn’t give winter flying the cold shoulder!
- Planes can perform better in cold weather
As a result, planes accelerate more quickly when taking off, which also means an increased rate of climb and reduced take off roll, while also giving the wings extra lift and allowing the plane to take off at a lower ground speed.
- Smoother conditions
Low level turbulence can be caused by wind, while flying over a tall mountain can mean encountering air that is being steered upwards. Clear air turbulence typically occurs at higher altitudes without any obvious clues such as clouds.
However, there can be less turbulence on cold, dry days because of less connective heating. This means you’ll most likely enjoy a calmer flight.
- Plane panorama
Lower humidity makes it easier to see, which can make all the difference to the enjoyment of flying when high above the ground looking out over a stunning landscape.
The science says that when the air is colder and drier there is less water vapour in the air to disperse light which causes the haze effect more associated with warmer, more humid days. In a nutshell, cold air is unable to hold as much moisture as warm air. The result is better visibility, and an incredible flying experience.
- Humans can also perform better
As well as enhancing a plane’s performance, colder weather can also be good for humans.
Studies have shown it is good for the brain and heart, can provide better sleep, and can even rejuvenate the skin. So whether you’re taking the controls in the cockpit, or enjoying the flight from the cabin, you’re likely to be more refreshed and invigorated over the winter period.
