Melbourne Airfield and Flying Experience Days
Airfield's History
Melbourne Airfield, originally established as a grass airstrip in November 1940, began its journey in aviation history as a relief landing ground for Armstrong Whitworth Whitleys of 10 Squadron, primarily serving RAF Leeming. In response to the increasing demands of World War II, the airfield underwent substantial redevelopment, transforming into a standard RAF Bomber Command airfield. This transformation included the construction of three concrete runways and three hangars, enhancing its capacity and operational capabilities.
Significantly, Melbourne Airfield was among the seventeen sites in the UK to be equipped with the FIDO (Fog Investigation and Dispersal Operation) system. This advanced technology was designed to disperse fog, thereby increasing the airfield's operational reliability under adverse weather conditions. As a result, Melbourne became a popular diversion point for squadrons returning from missions over Yorkshire, ensuring safer landings during foggy conditions and contributing to the overall wartime effort.
After the conclusion of its military service, Melbourne Airfield gradually adapted to peacetime activities. By repurposing its extensive runway infrastructure, the site evolved into a racing track. For many years, it was home to York Raceway, where drag racing events took place throughout the summer months. This period saw the airfield become a vibrant hub for motorsport enthusiasts, adding a new chapter to its rich history.
Despite the closure of York Raceway in 2017, the legacy of racing at Melbourne Airfield continues. The site now operates as Melbourne Raceway under the organisation of Straitliners, continuing to host drag racing events and maintaining its status as a key venue for motorsport in the region.
In addition to its racing activities, Melbourne Airfield serves the aviation community through its association with Pocklington Gyroplane School. This school utilises the airfield for gyroplane flying lessons, blending the airfield's historical roots in aviation with modern training and recreational flying.
Transitioning from its military role, Melbourne Airfield transformed into a racing track, operating as York Raceway until 2017. Today, it continues its racing legacy as Melbourne Raceway under the management of Straitliners. Additionally, the airfield serves as the base for Pocklington Gyroplane School, offering flying lessons amidst its racing activities.
