Elstree Aerodrome Flying Experiences

Elstree Aerodrome's History

Conveniently located for quick access to London and operating 24/7 without restrictions, Elstree Aerodrome welcomes general aviation and rotary flying enthusiasts. Offering dedicated ground handlers and Flight Information Service Officers (FISOs), along with round-the-clock refuelling, maintenance, hangar space, and multiple active flying schools and aviation businesses. Additionally, visitors can enjoy the on-site cafe serving breakfast, lunch, and afternoon tea seven days a week. Elstree is situated within the Aldenham Estate, owned and managed by Aldenham Aviation Limited. The aerodrome also provides office space for short or long-term lease, welcomes interior and exterior filming upon application, and can accommodate club meetings and other events. With over a hundred fixed-wing customers and a growing rotary base, along with round-the-clock operations, newly constructed hangars, and dedicated FISOs and ground staff, Elstree is the ultimate launchpad for your flying adventure, also offering Flying Lessons led by expert instructors.

Before World War II, Aldenham Country Club boasted a magnificent polo ground where, during the height of flying's popularity, many players would touch down their de Havilland Puss aircraft on Elstree's grass strip. However, the war transformed the landscape as the Ministry of Aircraft Production installed a concrete runway and erected the sizeable Bellman Hangar to service Wellington Bombers.

Following a post-war lull, Elstree saw a resurgence when managers began flying in converted Halifaxes loaded with Italian food to supplement depleted British stocks. Unfortunately, this venture was cut short after an overloaded plane crash-landed, damaging the runway. It was then up to John Houlder, a 34-year-old engineer and artillery officer, to revitalise the aerodrome, turning it into the wonderful site it is today, with hangarage, maintenance and Flying Lessons.

Terms and Conditions for Elstree Aerodrome

Once you order a voucher, it will be dispatched by one of our agency partners by e-voucher or by post, depending on which you choose when you checkout.

Vouchers are valid until the expiry date shown on your Voucher (typically 10-12 months).

In most cases, once you activate your voucher you will be sent the instructions to redeem the voucher directly with the airfield or operator. Because flying experiences (other than simulators) can only take place in suitable/ safe weather conditions, you must be prepared to be flexible on your activity date. If the agent or operator cancels your experience date, they will inform you as soon as possible and do their very best to offer an alternative date or location. Once a specific date has been booked, you will automatically become bound by the terms and conditions that the individual operator may have. This does not affect your statutory rights.

Whilst every effort is made to ensure the descriptions contained on our products are a true reflection of the experience, these do not form part of a contract. If on contacting the operator you feel that the activity taking place no longer accurately represents the activity purchased, the relevant agent will exchange the voucher or refund the purchase price.
