Andrewsfield Aerodrome Flying Experiences
What3Words: ///slower.swimmer.annotated
Andrewsfield Aerodrome is conveniently located in Essex, just a stone’s throw from the M11 and close to the M25 motorway and the A12, making it easily accessible for visitors from the South East and East of England. Andrewsfield - so named, because of its connections to Lieutenant General Frank M. Andrews, one of the most well respected and recognised figures in aviation during World War II - was one of eight airfields in Essex required as America entered into the ongoing European conflict following the devastating bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941. After the end of WWII in 1945, Andrewsfield gradually fell into disuse and disrepair before closing in 1948, with most of the original aerodrome buildings (excluding the T2 hangars) and runway turning over to farmland once again.
And that’s the way it stayed until 1972, when Clive Harvey and Robert Bucknell set out a 914 metre long grass strip along the same stretch where the original runway had laid, and thus Andrewsfield Aerodrome reopened for civil aviation, in particular as a base for the Andrewsfield Flying Club, which has been in operation there since 1975, with the CAA licensing it in 1976.
Flying Lessons
Andrewsfield Aerodrome is the perfect location to learn to fly and those who take to the skies will be rewarded with fantastic views of nearby Braintree, Great Dunmow and the surrounding area.
Indeed, it has seen countless people take their first steps to earning their Private Pilot’s Licence, and you could be next. Our 60-minute aeroplane flying lesson, in a two-seater plane, is the perfect way to see if learning to fly is for you. We’re pretty certain you’ll be bitten by the aviation bug as you experience flying an aeroplane for the first time. The trial lesson starts with a short pre-flight briefing, including an introduction to the aeroplane controls. However, not before long and you’ll be airborne. Your experienced pilot instructor will make you feel comfortable before letting you fly the plane for yourself.
It will be a magical experience, and hopefully, one that you’ll want to repeat time and time again as you gain confidence and possibly aim for a Private Pilot’s Licence.
